Alcea rosea, also known as hollyhocks, are tall, striking biennial or short-lived perennial plants that add vertical drama to gardens while serving as a host plant for painted lady butterfly (Vanessa cardui) caterpillars.

Hollyhocks grow 3–8 feet tall, with sturdy stalks lined with large, heart-shaped, slightly fuzzy leaves. Their flowers, which bloom typically June to August, are saucer-shaped, 3–5 inches wide, and come in vibrant shades of pink, red, white, yellow, purple, or even near-black. They form along the upper half of the stalk, creating a tower of color.
