Bulbophyllum falcatum is an unusual species native to tropical West and Central Africa, where it grows in moist, shady lowland forests. This species belongs to one of the largest and most diverse genera within the orchid family, and is beloved for its unique inflorescence that is reminiscent of a miniature work of nature's art.
Origin
Bulbophyllum falcatum is an unusual orchid native to tropical Africa, with a range extending from Sierra Leone in the west to southwestern Kenya in the east. It grows as an epiphyte in moist, shady lowland and submontane forests up to elevations of about 1,800 meters. This wide distribution reflects the adaptability of the species to diverse tropical habitats.
Characteristics
Some Bulbophyllum falcatum makes so striking is its scorpion-shaped flowering stem with rows of deep red to almost black flowers on one side of a flat "comb. The flowers are small but numerous, and together form a remarkably symmetrical pattern that contrasts sharply with the fresh green leaves. The leaves themselves are oblong and glossy, growing from oval pseudobulbs. This plant remains quite compact, making it perfect for the windowsill or a special spot in a heated greenhouse or plant room.
Care
Light
Give this orchid bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, especially in the afternoon, to prevent leaf burn.
Temperature
Bulbophyllum Falcatum likes warm conditions and feels best at temperatures between 20 and 28 °C. Cooler nights to about 16 °C are well tolerated.
Substrate
Use an airy, moisture-retentive substrate, such as a mix of fine orchid bark, sphagnum and a little peat moss. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot.
Humidity
This species thrives on high humidity of 60-80%. A humidifier or regular spraying helps meet this need, especially in dry indoor spaces.
Nutrition
During the growing period, feed the plant weekly with a highly diluted orchid fertilizer (1/4th of the recommended dosage). Nutrition is not necessary during the dormant period.
Watering
Constantly keep the substrate very slightly moist with demineralized water or clean rainwater. Do not let it dry out completely, but also avoid wet feet. In winter, watering may be reduced slightly.
Flowering
Flowering often appears in spring or fall, but can occur in between under constant conditions. The inflorescence is short-lived, but impressive for its quantity of flowers and unusual appearance.
