The nickname says it all — Velvet Cardboard Anthurium. Anthurium clarinervium is native to a single Mexican state, Chiapas, where it grows as an epiphyte on limestone karst and rocky outcroppings in the shaded forest. Its thick, almost leathery, heart-shaped leaves have a dense velvety surface and a network of bold, bright white veins that stand out against the deep green with the clarity of chalk on a blackboard. The leaves feel as substantial as they look — stiff, cardboard-like, built for endurance. At 40–65 cm it is compact enough for a shelf or tabletop and dramatic enough to anchor any room. One of the finest collector aroids for indoor growing.

💡 A Rock-Dweller, Not a Forest Floor Plant — Why Soil Matters In the wild, this Anthurium grows on limestone outcrops and tree surfaces, not in ground soil. Its roots are adapted to maximum air circulation and fast drainage — dense, moisture-retentive soil will kill it. A chunky, bark-heavy aroid mix is not optional here; it is the single most important factor in keeping this plant alive and thriving long-term.
☀️

Light

Bright indirect light — away from direct sun at all times. An east-facing window or 1–2 m back from a south-facing window with a sheer curtain is ideal. In autumn and winter, a little gentle direct morning sun is beneficial. The white veining dulls noticeably in low light — a reliable indicator that the plant needs more brightness. A grow light works very well.

💧

Watering

Allow the top third of the soil to dry before watering — then water thoroughly until it drains freely. Empty the saucer immediately. The chunky mix dries faster than standard potting soil; check by weight — a light pot means it's time to water. Reduce frequency in autumn and winter. Consistent overwatering is the leading cause of decline.

💦

Humidity

50–70% preferred — higher than average indoor humidity. Use a humidifier, pebble tray, or morning misting. Critically, ensure good air circulation alongside humidity — stagnant moist air encourages fungal issues on the velvety leaf surface. Do not mist in the evening. Keep away from radiators, AC vents, and heating sources.

🌱

Growing Media

Chunky, bark-heavy, extremely well-draining mix — this is non-negotiable. Use: 40% orchid bark, 25% perlite, 20% coco coir, 15% potting soil. pH 5.5–6.5. Can also grow in 100% sphagnum moss kept consistently moist but never sodden. Never use dense potting soil alone. Repot every 2–3 years in spring, one size up. A shallow, wide pot suits the root system better than a deep one.

🌾

Feeding

Balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength every 4–6 weeks in spring and summer only. Apply to moist soil. Flush soil every 3 months to prevent salt build-up. Do not feed in autumn or winter. Less is more — over-fertilizing causes root burn and brown tips.

🍂 Winter Rest — Cooler and Drier Is Better In winter, allow temperatures to drop slightly to 15–18°C and reduce watering further. This cooler, drier rest period mimics the plant's natural seasonal rhythm and promotes healthier, more vigorous growth the following spring. Do not stop watering entirely — just reduce frequency significantly.
🍊 Orange Berries — A Bonus on Mature Plants Mature Anthurium clarinervium occasionally produce flowers — a small green-white spathe, not particularly ornamental — followed by bright orange berries that are genuinely decorative. These appear on established plants only and are a sign of a thriving, well-cared-for specimen.
⚠️ Common Issues & Quick Fixes

Yellow Leaves

Overwatering or direct sun. Let the top third dry completely, check drainage, and move out of any direct light. Widespread yellowing with soggy soil means root rot — unpot, trim black roots, repot in fresh chunky mix, and water much less frequently.

Brown Tips or Crispy Edges

Low humidity or proximity to a heater, AC vent, or fan. Boost humidity and relocate away from drying air sources. Also check watering — prolonged dryness causes the same symptom. Existing brown tips are permanent; trim neatly.

Dull Veining or Small New Leaves

Insufficient light — the white vein pattern dims visibly in low light and new leaves grow smaller. Move to a brighter indirect position or add a grow light. Feed monthly during the growing season to support healthy leaf development.

New Leaves Look Rusty or Bronze

Completely normal — new leaves emerge in a rusty green-bronze colour before deepening to the rich dark green of mature leaves over 5–10 days. Do not mistake this for a deficiency or disease.

Spider Mites, Thrips or Mealybugs

Inspect leaf undersides and petiole bases regularly. Wipe with a soft damp cloth then spray with diluted neem oil or insecticidal soap every 5–7 days for 3 weeks. Good air circulation and maintaining 50%+ humidity reduce pest pressure significantly.

Durable Chew Toy That Actually Holds Up to Strong Jaws
Style: Gorilla, Size: Large (Pack of 1)
This Hammer for Pets Super Treadz Gorilla Dental Chew Toy has been a reliable option for a heavy chewer, especially for a large breed with a strong bite. The material feels tough and well-made, and it stands up well to consistent chewing without immediately breaking down like softer toys tend to do. It also gives a bit of dental benefit by helping reduce plaque and tartar buildup during play, which is a nice bonus since brushing isn’t always realistic. The textured surface keeps it interesting enough to hold attention for a while, and it doesn’t splinter or create a mess. Overall, it’s a solid, durable chew toy that works well for strong chewers who tend to destroy most standard toys quickly.

Great teeth cleaning toy
Style: Gator, Size: Large (Pack of 1)
I bought this for my pit bull. He is 75-80lbs. They didn't have an option for his weight, so I got the alligator for up to 35lbs. He has already chewed the alligator's face off. Now it is just an analgator. lol I do monitor him the whole time since he is over the weight limit of this chew toy. The body of the alligator has proven to be better suited for my pit bull's chewing than the face part. I bought an Arm & Hammer yellow bone chew toy for teeth cleaning a while back. It was the BEST THING EVER for my pit bull to chew on. He destroys every toy in a matter of minutes. That yellow bone lasted forever and he chewed on it daily and consistently throughout the day. I haven't been able to find another one like it, so I decided to get this alligator despite it not being for his size. It still seems durable and I think would last longer with a dog under 35lbs. I give it 5 stars bc it is a well-liked chew toy in my house with the dogs I have that like to chew. It seems well-made and great for cleaning teeth.

Great for aggressive chewers
Style: Gorilla, Size: Small (Pack of 1)
My little Corgi is an aggressive chewer. She has destroyed quite a few toys that were advertised for chewers. When I received this toy I had little confidence but it has lasted unscathed. Aside from being sturdy it also bounces so we play ball with it. It is one of her favorite toys.

Strong and Great for Treats, but Heavier Than Expected
Style: Gorilla, Size: Small (Pack of 1), Style: Gorilla, Size: Small (Pack of 1)
This is a very durable and well-made chew toy with good overall quality. The material is thick rubber and holds up well to chewing. It also works very well for holding treats, which stay in place securely. The main drawback is the weight. My dog is about 30 pounds, and even though this is a smaller version, it is still fairly heavy. She tends to use it mainly to get the treats out and then loses interest afterward. What I like: Very durable material Works great for holding treats Good bounce and quality construction Cute design Things to be aware of: Heavier than expected Some treats may be difficult to insert Dogs may lose interest once treats are gone Overall: This is a solid treat-based toy that is built well, but the weight may limit how much some dogs interact with it beyond treat use.

Extremely tough!
Style: Gorilla, Size: Large (Pack of 1)
These are seriously so much better (and cheaper) than any other supposedly "strong/durable" type toy like this. We have 70lb very strong chewers and they chew through everything. Can not have stuffies. They do eventually chew through but it seriously takes awhile. Especially in comparison to other brands. I will say it says "recommended for dogs under 35lbs" but I also work for houses where I recommended these for their dogs which were smaller and they wouldn't chew on because too tough. But they also accidentally bought the large which is what I buy my big dogs. So the large is GREAT for big dogs. If you have a dog under 35lbs I'd get the size small. Also .... says you can stuff treats. You really can't. Which my dogs don't need. They just love to chew on. I call it their bubble gum because when they FINALLY get a chunk off(which again takes awhile.... as in over a week) they will fling the pieces into the air and chew on like a piece of bubble gum lol... they love it! I don't notice a difference in breath or anything but I don't use the toothpaste either. I just bought to see if tough and they are!! And again price is clearly so much better. I hate spending $20+ on a toy they destroy in a day.
