The Crocodile Fern (Microsorum musifolium) is a unique and captivating houseplant that earns its name from its distinctive foliage. The fronds possess a remarkable, rough, and deeply veined texture that vividly resembles the scaly, leathery skin of a crocodile. Typically originating from the humid, tropical environments of Southeast Asia and parts of Australia, this fern brings an exotic, textural element to any indoor collection.
Although it is a very slow grower, the Crocodile Fern can eventually reach impressive sizes, potentially growing up to 5 feet tall in ideal conditions.
Unlike many flowering plants, ferns (including the Crocodile Fern) do not produce flowers. Instead, they reproduce via spores, which appear as small, dusty spots (called sori) on the undersides of the fronds.
-
Bright, Indirect Light. Avoid direct, harsh sunlight, which can scorch the fronds. They prefer filtered light conditions.
Keep the soil consistently moist, but not soggy. Allow the top inch of soil to dry out slightly between waterings.
Well-draining, moisture-retentive mix. A standard potting mix amended with peat moss, coconut coir, or orchid bark works well.
Warm. Thrives in ideal temperatures between 65°F – 80°F (18°C – 27°C). Avoid cold drafts and sudden temperature drops.
This plant should be fertilized once per month during the growing season (spring/summer) with a diluted houseplant fertilizer.
Non-Toxic (Pet-Friendly). Safe for homes with pets and children.
-
Typically grown indoors, but thrives outdoors in USDA Hardiness Zones 9-11.
