Tagetes lemmonii, commonly known as Mexican Marigold, is a lovely, bushy shrub with delicate, finely divided foliage that delights the senses with an intense fragrance when gently brushed or rubbed. During the fall and winter, it proudly showcases its cheerful orange-yellow flowers, with the occasional bloom throughout the other seasons. Interestingly, its flowering is influenced by shorter day lengths, so those cloudy days in spring can keep the blossoms going a little longer! This wonderful plant loves to bask in sunshine or enjoy some part shade while thriving in well-drained soil. Although it's drought-tolerant in coastal gardens, it truly flourishes with a bit of extra irrigation. Just be mindful—too much water or too little light can lead to leggy plants that may not bloom as beautifully.
While it’s tender to frost, it can bounce back quickly and is hardy down to at least 18°F. If you're considering shaping it, you can give it a good prune or hedge it back, but be careful, as this may reduce or delay flowering. It's worth noting that some people have experienced slight dermatitis from handling this plant, so taking care during pruning is a good idea.
Native to the stunning southern Arizona and northern Mexico, Tagetes lemmonii thrives in canyons at elevations ranging from 4,000 to 8,000 feet. You might also hear it referred to as Mountain Marigold, Copper Canyon Daisy, or Perennial Marigold. The fragrant blend of marigold, lemon, and mint that the plant emits can be quite a delightful aroma for some, while others may find it less appealing. On the bright side, deer tend to skip over this plant, leaving it to shine in your garden! This remarkable species was discovered by the resourceful field botanists John (1832-1908) and Sara (1836-1923) Lemmon, a husband and wife duo, in the beautiful landscapes of southeastern Arizona.
