Crassula ovata, commonly known as the Jade Plant or Money Tree, is a long-lived evergreen succulent admired for its glossy foliage and tree-like form. It grows slowly into a bushy sub-shrub reaching up to 2 metres in height when mature. The thick, rounded leaves are fleshy and dark green, often tinged with red around the edges when grown in bright light. The stems become woody with age, giving the plant a miniature tree appearance. In late summer, it produces flat clusters of small, star-shaped white or pale pink flowers that stand out beautifully against the rich green leaves. The combination of symmetry, texture, and subtle colour variation makes it a classic choice for both traditional and contemporary interiors.
Growing Conditions
Crassula ovata thrives in bright, indirect sunlight and enjoys several hours of gentle direct light each day. It prefers a well-draining, gritty compost suitable for succulents and cacti. Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry completely before watering again. Overwatering should be avoided, particularly in winter when the plant rests. Ideal temperatures range between sixteen and twenty-six degrees Celsius. It tolerates low humidity and adapts well to average household conditions. When placed outdoors during summer, ensure it is protected from heavy rain and frost. Adequate light will enhance the red edges of its leaves and encourage compact growth.
Care and Maintenance
This species is exceptionally low-maintenance and well-suited to beginner plant owners. Feed lightly in spring and summer using a diluted cactus fertiliser. Remove spent flowers and prune gently to shape or control size. Repot every two to three years in fresh compost to support root health. It can be propagated easily from stem or leaf cuttings rooted in dry compost.
Environmental Benefits
Crassula ovata improves indoor air quality and is often associated with good fortune and prosperity. Its enduring form and smooth, polished leaves bring natural calm and balance to indoor spaces.
