About Echeveria 'Amethyst'
Echeveria 'Amethyst' is a masterfully bred hybrid that captures the ethereal beauty of its namesake crystal. While its lineage remains a horticultural treasure, this succulent enchants with its ever-shifting palette and sculptural elegance. Forms statuesque rosettes (5–8" wide) with tightly layered, spoon-shaped leaves that spiral like a crystalline geode. New leaves emerge soft lavender-gray, maturing to a deep amethyst-purple under sunlight. Edges glow with translucent pink margins in cool weather, while a delicate silver farina (powdery coating) protects against sunburn. In spring, arching stalks rise bearing coral-orange, bell-shaped flowers—a fiery contrast to its cool-toned rosettes.
How to care for Echeveria 'Amethyst'
Light: Echeveria 'Amethyst' reveals its richest hues with 6+ hours of direct morning sun and dappled afternoon light. Intense midday sun may scorch its farina, while low light causes fading and stretching. A south-east windowsill is ideal.
Watering: Water only when the soil is completely dry (test 2" deep). Soak thoroughly, then let excess drain completely. In winter dormancy (<50°F/10°C), water monthly to prevent root desiccation. Always avoid wetting the farina coating.
Temperature: Ideal Range: 60–78°F (15–26°C). At 45–55°F (7–13°C), pink margins intensify dramatically. Tolerates 25°F (–4°C) if bone-dry (Zone 9b+). Above 85°F (30°C), rosettes tighten slightly; provide airflow to prevent farina loss.
Soil & Potting: Plant in terracotta pots with drainage holes using a gritty blend (60% cactus mix + 40% pumice). Shallow pots stabilize top-heavy rosettes. Repot every 2–3 springs.
Fertilizing: Nourish monthly in spring/early summer with low-nitrogen fertilizer (2-4-4), diluted to 25% strength. Excess nutrients dull its crystalline colors.
Pest Prevention: The farina naturally deters pests. Inspect leaf undersides for mealybugs; treat with cotton swabs dipped in 70% alcohol. Avoid overhead watering.
Propagation: Leaf cuttings root most successfully. Gently twist plump lower leaves, let callous 3 days, then place on dry soil. Offsets appear slowly at the base after maturity.
