Proso millet (Panicum miliaceum) is a warm-season annual grass widely used for wildlife food plots, forage, and grain production. It is valued by farmers and wildlife enthusiasts for its high seed yield, fast growth, and drought tolerance. The seeds are attractive to birds and small mammals, making it an excellent option for wildlife food sources. Proso millet is also used for soil health due to its ability to establish quickly and produce a significant amount of biomass.

Benefits for Wildlife

High-energy seeds for a variety of wildlife, including quail, pheasants, wild turkeys, and songbirds.
Attracts pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
Drought-tolerant, providing a reliable food source even during dry spells.
Quick-growing and high-seed-producing, making it ideal for wildlife food plots.
Provides cover and nesting habitat for small mammals and birds.

Planting Guidelines for Proso Millet

  • Planting Times:

    • Spring to early summer (late May to early June) – After the last frost date, when soil temperatures reach 60°F or higher for optimal germination.
  • Seeding Depth:

    • 1 to 1.5 inches deep – Planting too deep may hinder germination.
  • Seeding Rates:

    • Drilled: 12–15 lbs per acre for uniform coverage and good establishment.
    • Broadcast: 20–25 lbs per acre; lightly incorporate into soil with a cultipacker or harrow for seed-to-soil contact.
  • Days to Maturity:

    • 60–90 days from planting to maturity, depending on growing conditions and climate.
  • Height at Maturity:

    • Typically reaches 3–4 feet tall, with branching stems and seed heads.
  • Drought Tolerance:

    • High – Proso millet is well-suited for dry conditions once established, making it reliable during droughts.
  • Saturated Soil Tolerance:

    • Low – Prefers well-drained soils and does not tolerate prolonged waterlogging.
  • Shade Tolerance:

    • Low – Prefers full sun for optimal growth and seed production.

Fertilization Guidelines for Proso Millet

  • Soil pH:

    • Prefers a slightly acidic to neutral soil pH of 6.0–7.0.
  • Nitrogen (N):

    • Moderate nitrogen levels support optimal growth and seed production.
    • Apply 30–50 lbs of nitrogen per acre before planting, based on soil test recommendations.
  • Phosphorus (P) & Potassium (K):

    • Apply 30–60 lbs of phosphorus and 40–80 lbs of potassium per acre based on soil tests for healthy root and seed development.
    • Sunlight, soil fertility, and moisture all influence nutrient needs.

Fertilization Timing:

  • Apply all fertilizer at planting for optimal growth and early development.

Herbicide Use for Proso Millet

  • Weed Control:

    • Early weed competition can reduce millet yield, so weed control is essential in the early stages.
  • Pre-emergence Herbicides:

    • Prowl (Pendimethalin) – Effective at controlling grass and broadleaf weeds before millet emergence.
    • Sonalan (Ethafluralin) – Can be used for pre-emergence weed control without harming millet.
  • Post-emergence Herbicides:

    • Assure II (Quizalofop-P-ethyl) – Controls grassy weeds without harming proso millet.
    • Postemergence herbicides like Basagran (Bentazon) can help control broadleaf weeds but should be used with caution to avoid damage to millet.

Key Considerations:

  • Mechanical weed control (e.g., cultivation or mowing) is beneficial in managing weeds during early growth.
  • Use herbicides cautiously as proso millet can be sensitive to certain chemicals, particularly those designed for other crops. Always follow label instructions for safe application.

Simply The Best
Size: King (Pack of 1)
It appears there are more than 1,000 pillows advertised and available all over the Internet. The situation is a comedy routine. If you want a cooling pillow because you're a hot sleeper or if you want a plush pillow for back problems or a combination or neither, it doesn't matter. Be prepared to read 1,000 different advertisements until you start laughing out loud. This is what I did, but I wandered upon this Marlow Pillow system and then trusted the Amazon ratings. And boy am I happy, though a word of caution: if you want the cooling technology to really work you've got to pair this pillow with the Marlow pillow protector. Because Amazon didn't carry the pillow protector I bought it directly from Marlow. And this is the last pillow I'll ever get or need to get. Comfortable like a goose down pillow and yet cool to the touch and cool all night long. So I got lucky; have avoided having to buy multiple pillows; and now am enjoying the heck out of my Marlow King with the Marlow pillow protector. Lastly, this pillow is adjustable with a zipper and it works: you can make it softer or harder with a quick zip. The best pillow out there, by far!

Really good pillow!
Size: King (Pack of 1)
This is the first pillow that I have owned in the last 10 years in which I have not experienced any neck pain. It's the right density, comfort level, and is a high-quality item. I am a side and stomach sleeper. Try this pillow and I think you'll be happy.

OMG I finally found the one
Color: White, Size: Standard
I use to have a pillow that I took it everywhere. It finally was gone I couldn’t find one that I had. So my quest for the perfect pillow was 17 different pillows. I finally found the one!!! This pillow is soft but is sturdy. My head lays on the pillow and doesn’t fall to the bed. My neck isn’t tilted in an awkward position. The coolness of the pillow is amazing. This pillow is everything I was looking for. The price is 100% worth it. Edit ok I still love the pillow but you have to flip it because all the stuffing moves to the other side. The pillow still has enough that it was still comfortable. I wish that the stuffing would stay in the same pot.

Nice Pillow
Color: White, Size: King
I waited a few weeks before writing this review. It’s very difficult to find Info on this pillow but here’s my take on it. Height: It’s a nice height on the pillow. It has a 2” gusset which upon my research is a way to keep the inside foam and down at least 2” high. Types of sleeping: I find this pillow to be comfortable in all sleep positions. I do find that because it’s not full foam that you don’t get that full compression feeling so back sleep is not as comfortable to me as other pillows I’ve used but still very comfortable Back: Has enough height that my neck is supported. It’s not full foam so you will have to adjust your head position so it fits perfectly into the curve of the pillow for best support. Side: Thick enough that the compatibility with my mattress sink allows my body to be comfortably aligned. I have a medium hybrid tempurpedic luxe breeze. Stomach: Just barely thick enough to be comfortable. I sleep somewhat weird and like my arm to go under the pillow. This gives me the correct height for stomach sleeping if I put my head on the bottom part of the pillow. This also allows me to breathe lol. Cooling This pillow has awesome cooling. Even when I wake up the pillow is still ice cold. Never had this feeling before and I’m a hot sleeper so i really like this. Granted I do set my house temperature to like 73 to sleep. The sensor is right next to my bed so it’s a true 73. Material This has foam outer layers and a fiber fill. It really does feel unique and it’s comfy. It’s a decently heavy pillow too in king so that gives confidence there is good quality foam and materials in it. One thing to know, the cover is “slippery” and it took some getting used to, even though I use a pillow case I can feel it slides in the case more than other pillows. I think it’s because the cover is very thing to promote airflow and heat transfer. I wish it was adjustable for the price. Price I like the pillow, and got mine on sale. But I do think it’s a bit overpriced for what it is. Evidently the sale price I got wasn’t a good price and it’s gone as much as 20% off. Oh well.
