Alyssum Carpet of Snow is a small, low-growing annual plant with tiny white flowers that bloom in clusters, giving it the appearance of a soft, white blanket. Alyssum has been used for centuries for ornamental purposes, but it became really popular during the Victorian era.

Reaching only 6-8 inches tall and spreading out to about 10-12 inches in diameter, Carpet of Snow is a low-maintenance, easy to grow plant that is good at attracting beneficial pollinators to your garden, like bees and butterflies. The blooming occurs in late spring/early summer and the flowers have a sweet, honey-like fragrance.

Alyssum Carpet of Snow is a good choice for ground cover, as an edging plant, as a filler in mixed borders and it is also popular in rock gardens and for filling gaps in stone walls. This old-time favourite can certainly add charm and elegance to any garden setting.

GROWING INSTRUCTIONS

Sweet alyssum is the perfect flower to grow as an understory or ground cover. The foliage grows rapidly, creeping and spreading over the landscape. Dainty, four-petal flowers begin to appear within months of germination. Alyssum will perform wonderfully in cool climates. It typically flowers through the spring, fades during hot summers and returns to blooming in the fall. Alyssum grows vigorously and can become invasive (usually in warm climates) if not kept in check. Fill in any empty garden space with these lacy flowers and watch as they attract all sorts of beneficial insects.

Start seeds indoors six to eight weeks before the last frost date. Sow seeds thinly into a flat and mist until thoroughly moist. No need to cover the tiny seeds, just place the flat in a warm location under grow lights or a sunny south-facing window. Thin seedlings to about 15 cm apart as they start popping up.

Seeds can also be sown outdoors after the last frost has passed. Scatter seeds in the garden and lightly press them into the soil. They should have solid contact with the surface of the soil while still exposed to the light. Moisten the soil and keep an eye out for germination. Thin as needed as the seedlings sprout.

Plant your alyssum in full sun, unless living in a hot climate. If this is the case, be sure it gets some afternoon shade. Alyssum will tolerate many soil types but does the best in well-drained soil that is consistently moist. It will require 3 cm of water per week in general. Alyssum grown in the landscape won’t typically require any feeding, unless the soil is particularly poor.

Deadhead your sweet alyssum to encourage the setting of new buds and production of a higher volume of flowers. If plants get leggy, they can be pruned back to look tidier. Containers of alyssum can be taken in for the winter, or overwintered outdoors. Cut it to the ground and cover with a protective layer of cloth or mulch. Another simple method is to leave it as is for the winter and cut back in the spring to make way for the self-sown seeds from last year.

Interestingly, these honey-scented flowers are related to cruciferous vegetables like cabbage and kale. Alyssum is wonderfully versatile. Plant it among walking paths and stonewalls, in empty spaces, along edges of the garden or as a cascade of elegant flowers spilling from hanging baskets.

QUICK FACTS

- Like broccoli, turnip, cabbage and mustard, Sweet Alyssum is a member of the brassica genus family.

- Alyssum seeds will remain viable for 3 years if stored in a cool, dark place, ideally between 4 and 10⁰C. After that, the germination rate may start to go down.

Halloween product
This is a very vibrant red. It’s perfect for Halloween or if you wanted to temporarily dye your head red. It washes off easily as well. I definitely recommend it for dressing up on Halloween.

Visible even on dark brown hair
This red hair spray is vivid even on dark brown hair! Perfect for Halloween or dress up days. Can sprays a light mist of color that you can build up for total coverage. Doesn't have a strong smell. Washes out very easily with just shampoo and water! I love that it is easier to use than color gels and the spray makes it easy to get where it needs to be. Color lasted all day for me.

Fun for hair, but could stain other things
This could be fun for the hair temporarily, but be careful. I ordered the red color. My hair is dark colored and the red was pretty bright on my hair. I sprayed on my ends and it was fine. But, I would suggest wearing something you don’t mind getting ruined because of the spray dye. It could smear and rub on clothing. Also, the spray can be a very fine mist, I sprayed this in the bathroom and that was a mistake. The fine color mist seemed to have traveled everywhere in the bathroom. I sprayed directly on my hair, but it went on the counter, sink etc and it was a little staining. I washed the sink twice and scrubbed and it still looks to have a tint on red still there. So, I suggest spraying outside. And then when showering, the red splashed everywhere too. I had to scrub the shower too. It was such a hassle for temporary hair color fun. I’m not sure I would use again after my experience. It’s fine for fun, but the aftermath wasn’t so fun. Use with caution.

Smells Great! Very Messy.
I'm so glad I did a trial run with this spray just before showering. That choice turned a disaster into an amusing inconvenience. The Good stuff: This product smells amazing. Probably the best colored hair spray I've ever smelled. The spray has good coverage. I wasn't trying for full coverage when I did my test, but I was impressed by how evenly I was able to apply the color. It dries really fast, without stickiness. The red color is bold and vibrant, with no orange undertones. So far, so good, right? The Bad stuff: Getting into the safety cap required using a box cutter. Simple twisting or scissors didn't work at all. But that was a one-time issue, so I could overlook it. But this product is MESSY. It covers well. Too well. When I sprayed my hair, the overspray also covered my chest and back. My torso looks like burned meat. If I hadn't been preparing to shower, whatever clothes I'd been wearing would have been ruined. There are no instructions on the packaging about how to avoid overspray. And it isn't just a tiny amount of overspray, either. My torso is about 60% covered. In addition to that, once the spray is used for the first time, the can leaks, getting red dye all over my hands, and dripping down onto the counter. Unacceptably messy.
