You will receive a seed packet containing approximately 75 Pokeweed (Phytolacca americana) seeds (1 gram). Also known as poke berries, polk berries, poleberry, pokeweed, poke, pokesalad, pigeonberry and inkberry. Native to the Eastern, Midwestern, and Southern United States, pokeweed is a large, highly poisonous, herbaceous perennial plant that can grow up to 8 feet tall and form dense clumps. Its arching branches add architectural interest to open landscapes and many native pollinators, including bees, hummingbirds, and the giant leopard moth love its white flowers that bloom in spring. All parts of the pokeweed plant are poisonous to humans, but many birds are able to eat poke berries long after many other plants have gone dormant for the winter. Poke berries can be used as a natural dye for fabrics and were even used as ink to write letters during the Civil War. This historically significant plant is easy to grow and supports local ecosystems. Pokeweed will be a lovely addition to your outdoor space, and you can feel good about helping local wildlife!
Pokeweed seeds are protected by a tough seed coat, which allows them to remain viable for up to 40 years. This means that pokeweed seeds can remain stubbornly dormant even when given proper conditions, therefore, growing pokeweed from seed requires patience. To encourage seeds to germinate when desired, fall planting outdoors is recommended. Plant seeds 1/2" deep in locations that receive at least six hours of direct sunlight and soils that remain moderately moist; pokeweed will grow in a variety of soil types. Alternately, store seeds in the refrigerator in a moist substrate such as peat, perlite, or vermiculite before planting in spring.
