Characteristics

Hancock's Argentine Bahia Spring & Summer Grass Seed Mix is a great replacement option for problematic lawns and pastures, especially in warmer climates. Its deep and dense root structure allows it to perform well under drought conditions and it is one of the most environmentally-friendly lawn and pasture varieties available.

Argentine Bahia Grass has wide, broad leaves with a light to medium green color. Bahia's require a minimum of 8 hours of sunlight for optimal growth. Once established, Argentine Bahia Grass produces 10 to 12 feet of deep and dense root structure. Hancock’s Argentine Bahia grass seed is the best lawn grass and pasture grass seed available for southern climates, especially Florida. This variety makes an excellent low-maintenance permanent lawn grass or pasture grass for horses, cattle, and any other type of livestock.

The Brown Top Millet is added to assist in fast ground coverage, retaining soil moisture and preventing soil and seed erosion. The Brown Top Millet will germinate in 7 days under optimal conditions and grow for approximately 65 days. It is very important to keep the newly seeded areas watered and mowed to prevent the Brown Top Millet from overcrowding or shading out the Argentine Bahia seedlings.

Coated seed is surrounded in a clay based coating which aids in moisture retention for germination, birds tend not to eat the coated seed, and it is easier to see where it has been spread. The coating takes up a portion of the bag, which means less seed per pound but you are getting the added benefit of the coating. The raw seed is just how it sounds, seed in the purest form - not coated or mixed with anything.

Hancock's Argentine Spring & Summer Grass Seed Mix contains:
Argentine Bahia Grass Seed - Coated
Brown Top Millet Seed - Raw

Hancock's Argentine Spring & Summer Grass Seed mix typically has Argentine Bahia Grass Seed and Brown Top Millet Seed. The percentages of mixes can vary slightly from year to year. Please call our office with any questions (800-552-1027).

Soil Prep

  • When choosing to start a new lawn, remove old vegetation by using a de-thatcher, power rake or tiller to kill the existing vegetation. Rake or drag the area to remove debris and dead grass for a clean area. Ensure the soil is leveled and loosened to allow the seed to have good soil contact once spread on a clean seed bed.
    • If you have an area with heavy weed coverage, we recommend starting fresh by killing and removing the existing vegetation. If you choose to use chemicals, herbicides or fertilizers, you must check with the product’s manufacturer prior to planting new seed to ensure the proper waiting period.
  • When overseeding an existing area, mow your lawn at the lowest setting and bag the clippings. Rake or drag any areas that have dead thatch or debris.

Seeding

  • Seeding Rate: 2 - 3 lbs. per 1,000 sq. ft. or 100-150 lbs. per acre
  • Overseeding Rate: 1 - 2 lbs. per 1,000 sq. ft. or 50 - 100 lbs. per acre
  • Spread at the recommended rate based on total area and whether it is bare ground or pre-existing vegetation.
  • Spreader Settings: There is not any one setting that applies for all brands of spreaders. We recommend reviewing the seed settings chart that came with your spreader or contact the manufacturer directly. Ensure you are choosing a seed on the list by the manufacturer that closely resembles the seed you are choosing to plant.
    • If you have any concerns on what setting you should use, we recommend always starting with the smallest option then adjusting it to match the recommended seeding rate.

Fertilizer

  • Grass like all living things need food to survive. Food for grasses is fertilizer. We recommend fertilizing every 3 - 4 months with Hancock's 16-04-08 Lawn & Pasture Fertilizer. Our 16-04-08 Lawn and Pasture Fertilizer is custom blended to provide a slow-releasing, water-activated economical fertilizer. Hancock's 16-04-08 Lawn & Pasture Fertilizer can be applied at a rate of 5 lbs. per 1,000 sq. ft. or 250 lbs. per acre. The most probable cause of a declining lawn or pasture is poor nutrition. If you have any concerns about your soil, we recommend getting your soil tested to determine what nutrients you are low in as well as your pH. The results of the soil testing will give you the best information to amend your soil for the best grass growth.

Watering Schedule

  • For best results, water your lawn each morning and evening for 30 minutes based on weather conditions, until the new seedlings have reached the height of 3 - 5 inches for lawns or 8 - 20 inches for pasture.
  • Once they have reached that height, water 3 times per week as needed.
  • For best results, keep the soil moist while not over-watering the area or creating puddles.

Germination Time

  • Brown Top Millet - 7 days, under optimal conditions
  • Argentine Bahia - 21 - 30 days, under optimal conditions

Mowing Requirements

  • Lawns: Mow at 3 - 5 inches regularly.
  • Pastures: Mow or allow grazing to keep pastures maintained at 8-20 inches.
  • It is very important to keep the newly seeded areas watered and mowed at 3 - 5 inches to prevent the Brown Top Millet from overcrowding or shading out the Argentine Bahia seedlings.

Important Story!
Format: Hardcover
12 year old Nimra is thrilled when her parents suggest she transfer to public school, which means she'll finally be with her best friend, Jenna. When Jenna acts strangely about Nimra's hijab on their first day, Nimra is desperate to prove she can fit in. Even though her family doesn't approve of music, Nimra joins a boy band, hoping their popularity will help repair her friendship with Jenna. She doesn't intend to remain in the band after she wins Jenna back, but the boys enter them in a fundraising benefit. Nimra's web of lies grows until she finally has to face what she's done––and figure out who she is at home and at school. A lovely story about a girl torn between her religion and the trials of middle school, this book is a recommended read.

Sweet story
Format: Hardcover
This is an enjoyable, lightweight story, perfect for middle school students. The child I bought it for is from a different culture than that depicted, and for her it was a bridge-builder in terms of helping to find commonalities and differences. It was a fun experience--effortless learning, the best kind! For others, it may be useful to see themselves reflected in the young heroine, but I can't speak to whether they will find the mirror accurate. For my reader, the conflict felt real and relatable - who hasn't experienced feeling different and excluded? And she was captured beginning to end.

excellent middle-grade novel
Format: Hardcover
This story of a muslim girl in the US and her school friends and ordinary dramas is a great addition to school libraries or public libraries and also for girl readers 9-12 or so. It's wonderful that we are getting novels about people from other faiths that are aimed at mainstream readers. It is so important for kids to read books about people from other backgrounds as well as for those from those backgrounds to have books in which they see themselves reflected. Well done!

Vampire Fantasy
Format: Kindle
Following Val through this adventure of trying to find her place in the world while cultists are literally trying to get her, made me feel like I was on the edge of my seat. I also love the idea that vampires/werewolves(peak at Roving Darkness and the Druids Destiny) are just living everyday life like humans. This book made me wish I was living in this world because it felt so real. Its also very sapphic

enjoyable cozy urban fantasy
Format: Kindle
Getting kidnapped by her cult-leader grandfather and held chained for other a month is not a pleasant experience. But when Vedalia's (Vel) aunt comes and rescues her, things start to take a turn for the better. Especially when said aunt is a vampire, who is married to a witch, and they're giving her a new start at life. This story is very much a cozy urban fantasy. There is actions and threats (as her grandfather doesn't know when to give up), but not a lot of angst (not a bad thing at all in my opinion ^^). The focus of the story is very much on Vel as she adapts to life with her new found family, and makes new friends. There is romance in the story, and it's cute - they make an adorable couple. But there is a lot more going on as well. It is an enjoyable read that is well written and paced well, and I definitely appreciate the queer representation that is in the story. The main threat is wrapped up well, and I certainly would be interested in seeing more of the characters, and Vel growing more into what she has been given. Happily devoured and I look forward to reading more by her.
