Product Description:
The Orbea lutea var. vaga, also known as Orbea lutea subsp. vaga, is a fascinating succulent native to regions like Namibia, southwestern Angola, and South Africa. It thrives in diverse habitats, ranging from sandy soils to rocky terrains under small bushes. This plant forms small clumps or mats with grey-green stems that are often mottled with red-brown. Its striking flowers, which bloom in dense clusters during summer, vary in color from blackish-maroon to reddish-brown, flecked with yellow. The fruits are spindle-shaped follicles containing seeds with tufts of long white hairs.
Origination: Namibia, southwestern Angola, and South Africa
Historic Uses: Collectable, Ornamental
Height: <1Ft
Hardiness: USDA 9+
Flower Color: Maroon to Rust-Colored, Flecked with Yellow
Other Names: Carrion Flower
Growing Instructions:
Thrives in light shade to partial sun. Avoid exposing it to intense, direct sunlight for extended periods as it may cause stress or scorching. During its growing season (spring to early fall), water it moderately, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. Reduce watering in the winter, keeping it almost completely dry to prevent rot. Use gritty, well-draining soil, such as a mix of cactus potting soil and sand or perlite. This helps mimic its natural habitat and prevents water retention around the roots. Ideal hardiness zones are USDA 9b to 10b, meaning it can tolerate temperatures down to 25°F (-3°C). Protect it from frost by bringing it indoors during colder months if necessary. If growing it in a pot, make sure it has drainage holes to avoid water logging. A shallow, wide container works best to accommodate its clumping growth habit. During the growing season, you can fertilize with a diluted cactus or succulent fertilizer once a month. Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can harm the plant.
Ships in 3.5" pots. You will receive a plant similar to the ones pictured, though size and fullness may vary. Please understand that shipped plants have bumpy rides. A few broken leaves or small stems are normal during shipping and are not considered damage. Broken stems can be rooted once the cut end dries to start new growth. Plants may arrive semi‑dormant, and in winter they may naturally drop a few leaves. If your plant arrives rotting or dead, we will replace it. Please contact us with photo proof within 24 hours of delivery. After 24 hours, plant care becomes the buyer’s responsibility, though we’re always happy to answer questions and help you succeed. We also add brief instructions on getting started when you open your box. We want our plant babies to have happy new homes! 🥰
Heat packs are available to purchase in our shop for cold-sensitive plants. Keep in mind some plants we carry are very tropical and even cold, not freezing, temperatures can kill them. 📌IF YOU EXPECT COLD WEATHER, PLEASE PURCHASE A HEAT PACK! 📌 These are necessary for winter shipping, so I sell them at cost. I won't refund or replace any frozen plants unless you buy one!
