Sempervivum Arctic White is a perennial, mat-forming succulent characterized by its heavy production of white, woolly cilia (hairs). These white threads crisscross from leaf tip to leaf tip, creating a dense, snowy canopy over a vibrant green rosette.
This is a modern cultivar derived from Sempervivum arachnoideum (the Cobweb Houseleek). Its parent species are native to the high-altitude European mountains, particularly the Alps and Pyrenees.
In mid-summer, mature rosettes produce leafy stalks topped with bright, star-shaped pink flowers. The contrast between the neon-pink blooms and the snowy white, cobwebbed rosettes is striking. As a monocarpic plant, the flowering rosette will finish its life cycle after blooming, but it will have already produced many "chicks" to continue the colony.
-
Prefers full sun to partial shade. High light levels are essential to keep the white webbing thick and the rosette compact.
Requires gritty, rocky, or sandy soil with excellent drainage. A mix of 50% potting soil and 50% grit (pumice, perlite, or fine gravel) works best.
Low water requirements. Use the "soak and dry" method. Be careful to water the soil directly rather than the top of the plant, as moisture trapped in the thick white webbing can lead to rot.
Feed lightly once or twice during the growing season with a diluted, low-nitrogen fertilizer. Overfeeding can cause leggy growth and weaken the plant.
Non-toxic and safe for cats, dogs, and horses.
