Senecio peregrinus ‘String of Dolphins’ is a trailing succulent notable for its plump, curved leaves that resemble a pod of jumping dolphins. Each leaf is shaped like a small arched dolphin, complete with a notch resembling a dorsal fin. The stems are slender and flexible, allowing the plant to cascade gracefully over the edges of pots or hanging planters. Its growth habit is compact and draping, making it ideal for display on shelves or in hanging baskets where its unusual leaf shape can be fully appreciated.
This hybrid is the result of a cross between Senecio/Curio rowleyanus (String of Pearls) and Senecio/Curio articulatus (Hot-dog Cactus). While not naturally occurring in the wild, its parent species originate from southern Africa, and it retains their drought-tolerant, low-maintenance qualities when grown indoors.
Native to: A cultivated hybrid; parent species originate from southern Africa.
Water: Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. When watering, soak thoroughly and let excess water drain freely. Do not let the plant sit in water. During winter, water much less frequently to avoid root rot.
Light: Prefers bright filtered light. Can tolerate some morning or late afternoon sun, but avoid strong midday direct sun which can scorch the leaves. Too little light can cause stretching and loss of the leaf’s dolphin-like shape.
Humidity: Tolerates average indoor humidity well. Does not require high humidity and should be kept in relatively dry air compared to tropical houseplants.
Temperature: Best grown at indoor temperatures of 18–24 °C. Protect from temperatures below 10–12 °C and avoid cold drafts or placement near radiators.
