Officially known as a Kit, jungle, emergency, back pad container, this is a U.S. Army Air Force Type Parachute Emergency Bail Out Survival Set that would have been attached to the harness system of an escape parachute on multiple U.S. Aircraft during World War Two including Boeing B-17 Flying Fortresses and B-24 Liberators. The same type kit is located in the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum and can be seen at this link.
The kit is constructed of a heavy foam interior with cut out cavities for all the components. Heavy OD green canvas exterior that zips open with two functional CROWN zippers. Marked on the interior:

Bright Harrison Butz was born on August 28, 1921 in Cressona, Pennsylvania. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on August 16, 1940 with the ASN 13005376. Master Sergeant Butz served a total of 480 days of foreign service from December 7, 1941 to October 13, 1945 and was a part of the Air Transport Command as a Ferrying Service for aircraft.
Inside the kit are the following items:
- Bowie knife by Kinfolk. This knife measures 14 inches overall, the blade measures 9.25 inches. This knife has a brass guard, and black composite grip. Includes brown leather scabbard. Overall in very good condition, with minor surface rust and pitting from long storage.
