Origins and History

Biobio Quinoa is an heirloom variety originating from the Biobío region of southern Chile, an area known for its diverse agroecological traditions. Unlike the high-altitude quinoas of the Andes, Biobio was developed in temperate lowland valleys, making it particularly well-suited to regions with cooler, shorter summers. This adaptation highlights the wide ecological range of quinoa and demonstrates its historic role as a staple food across different climates in South America.

Appearance and Characteristics

The plants of Biobio Quinoa typically grow to 3–5 feet tall, with branching stems and leaves that resemble spinach in shape. The seed heads are dense, upright, and colorful, ranging from pale ivory to soft rose tones at maturity. The seeds are small, rounded, and cream-colored, covered with a natural bitter saponin coating that must be removed before consumption. Biobio is valued for its uniformity and ability to mature reliably in cooler regions.

Culinary Uses

As with other quinoa varieties, Biobio is a high-protein grain alternative, containing all nine essential amino acids. Once rinsed to remove saponins, the grains cook quickly into a fluffy texture with a mild, nutty flavor. They can be used in pilafs, porridges, salads, soups, and baked goods, or ground into flour for gluten-free baking. Its versatility and nutrition have made quinoa a staple in both traditional and modern kitchens.

Growing Tips

Biobio Quinoa is well-suited for USDA Zones 4–9, thriving in temperate regions where summers are mild and not excessively humid. It prefers well-drained soil and full sun. Sow seeds directly into the soil after the danger of frost has passed, at a depth of about ¼ inch. Rows can be spaced 12–18 inches apart, with thinning to 8–12 inches between plants for best growth. Quinoa tolerates drought once established but benefits from consistent moisture during germination and early growth.

Harvesting Guidance

Quinoa is typically ready for harvest 90–120 days after sowing, depending on local conditions. Plants are mature when the leaves have yellowed and dropped, leaving the seed heads standing full and dry. Harvest on a dry day, cutting the seed heads and allowing them to cure further in a well-ventilated space. Once thoroughly dry, thresh to release the seeds and winnow to remove chaff. Before cooking, rinse the seeds thoroughly to wash away the bitter saponin coating. Properly dried and stored quinoa will keep for months, maintaining its flavor and nutritional quality.

3 in 1 Deal: Moisturizer, Sunscreen, and No White Cast!!
Style: Face Lotion - SPF 30, Size: 1.7 Fl Oz (Pack of 1), Style: Face Lotion - SPF 30, Size: 1.7 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
Short Review: It’s affordable and dark-skin friendly! A rich moisturizing lotion texture, lightly fragranced, with no white cast. If you have oily skin, you don't even need to moisturize beforehand, just skip straight to this sunscreen after cleansing. (Probably wouldn't be the same for people with dry skin). It’s at first tacky but it dries down to a smooth finish. Though this does have a shine to it that leaves your skin with a healthy dewy glow, if you have super oily skin like me, do follow up with a powder. If not after a couple of hours you’ll go from glowy to a grease soaked donut. The Story: I was shocked that the bottle was tiny/the size of my hand (funny when I’ve been through this shock at least a hundred times when trying sunscreens from Korean and Japanese brands) but rest assured, it does do its job (at least for me) and is affordable. I’ve struggled with finding a decent sunscreen for a good year now. I’ve tried Neutrogena Clear Face (baaad breakout), Biore Aqua Rich (breakout), Nieva UV Super Water Gel (breakout), Frudiva (okay no breakouts but heavily scented, thick lotion, and left me super shiny), Hada Labo (beautiful lightweight texture but made me break out)—basically the struggle was real. Until I landed on Australian Gold tinted sunscreen. That stuff is magic, keeps me matte, and makes my skin look better but the darkest shade has a gray undertone so I have to follow it up with bronzer. This sunscreen is perfect for when I don’t want to deal with the hassle of wearing my tinted sunscreen, am going out to run a quick errand, or when I’m staying indoors the entire day. The pump is super useful, especially if you do the two finger method application method. It comes out a yellowish color but once you rub it in, it easily disappears into the skin. At first, it feels tacky, almost as if you’ve applied a serum, but within 1-3 minutes it dries down to a smooth finish. It does leave a shine but nothing that a sebum or setting powder can’t handle for 4-5 hours. The big pointer is that so far no breakouts but I’ve been using this only for two days so I’ll update this if I see any changes in my skin. I’m super glad I found this affordable option! I was looking at Elta MD (heard it piles, especially with makeup so I held back) and La Roche Posay Anthelios Ultra Light but luckily I decided to peak at the more affordable spectrum of sunscreen. As of now, this sunscreen is a keeper. Let’s see how it stands after a week!
