Alocasia 'Regal Shields'
Alocasia 'Regal Shields' is a large hybrid Alocasia with broad dark green shield-shaped leaves, pale green veins and deep purple undersides. The foliage is held on sturdy petioles, giving the plant a tall, broad-leaved shape as it matures.
Its parentage is Alocasia odora × Alocasia reginula 'Black Velvet', combining broad elephant-ear scale with darker, vein-marked foliage.
Shield leaves with purple undersides
- Leaves: Large shield-shaped blades in dark green with clear vein relief.
- Undersides: Purple to burgundy tones show when leaves tilt or are viewed from below.
- Growth: Large hybrid Alocasia that can become a substantial floor plant indoors.
- Parentage: Alocasia odora × Alocasia reginula 'Black Velvet'.
Managing larger leaves indoors
Alocasia 'Regal Shields' needs room for leaves, a pot that balances its weight and a root zone that stays warm. While growth is active, the plant can use more water than smaller Alocasia, but the mix still needs to release excess moisture quickly.
- Light: Bright softened daylight helps leaves size up, petioles stay firm and colour remain dark.
- Watering: Water fully once the upper few centimetres dry. Adjust intervals as leaf size and season change.
- Substrate: Use a coarse aroid mix with bark, coco chips, pumice or perlite and a fertile moisture-retentive component.
- Pot choice: Choose a stable pot with enough weight for the broad leaf mass.
- Temperature: Keep warm, ideally 20–30 °C when new leaves are forming.
- Humidity: Higher household humidity helps the large leaves expand with cleaner edges.
- Feeding: Feed regularly at moderate strength while new leaves are developing.
- Repotting: Repot during warm active growth when roots fill the pot and the plant dries quickly after watering.
Watering around broad leaf growth
- Leaning plant: Rotate toward the light and check pot stability.
- Yellow lower leaves: Review root health, light level and seasonal slowdown before changing the watering amount.
- Brown margins: Check dry air, watering gaps and fertiliser salts.
- Pest pressure: Inspect broad undersides for spider mites and thrips, especially in warm dry rooms.
Space and access for a bigger aroid
Alocasia 'Regal Shields' is toxic if chewed. Keep it out of reach of pets and children, and wear gloves if sap irritates your skin.
Regal Shields hybrid line
The genus name Alocasia was coined in relation to Colocasia. Mature plants develop large shield-like leaves with purple to burgundy undersides.
