Team: United States — 1960 Winter Olympics
Event: 1960 Squaw Valley Winter Olympics — men's ice hockey tournament
Result: Gold medal — first American Olympic hockey gold
The 1960 Squaw Valley Winter Olympics produced one of the great upsets in American sports history. Team USA, a roster of amateurs and college players led by head coach Jack Riley, defeated the powerhouse Soviet Union squad 3–2 and then beat Czechoslovakia 9–4 in the gold-medal game to claim the first American Olympic gold medal in ice hockey — a result so unexpected that it earned the nickname "the original Miracle on Ice," twenty years before the 1980 Lake Placid team made the phrase iconic.
The blue-and-white 1960 USA hockey jersey, with its bold mid-century graphic identity and U.S. shield, stands as the foundational artifact of American international hockey success. Captain Jack Kirrane, brothers Bill and Roger Christian, and goaltender Jack McCartan all wore this design at Squaw Valley — a jersey that, six decades later, remains one of the most historically significant pieces of American hockey apparel.
